AIREMIT – Project Kick-Off

ER Srls and Aurelia kicked-off today the AIREMIT project.
AIREMIT – Aviation In situ measuRements of non-CO2 EMIssion Traces – was created to address the critical need to more precisely quantify the climate impact of the aviation sector, focusing in particular on non-CO₂ emissions such as nitrogen oxides, non-volatile particulate matter, and the resulting formation of contrails. Although recent studies indicate that these factors contribute predominantly to aviation radiative forcing, current estimates suffer from high uncertainties due to the lack of direct measurements at cruising altitudes and the difficulty of modelling microphysical interactions in the atmosphere. To fill this technological and knowledge gap, the project aims to develop and validate the “ClimpactSonde”, an innovative, cost-effective atmospheric sounding system based on IoT technologies, specifically designed for in-situ sampling in flight corridors.
AIREMIT is supported by the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking under the Engage 2 KTN scheme, second Call for Catalyst funding in the domain of air traffic management (ATM).
